How it began - Part 2

It's Christmas time 1978 in the Derby City and that means the Carl Casper Custom Auto Show is right around the corner. Every year in February the highlight of the car show at the Fairgrounds was the Band Battle sponsored by Far Out Music in Jeffersonville, IN.

John and Bill had watched many a band compete in this battle of garage bands from around the region. This time however, would be different. Why? Because Caribou's getting in this one, and they plan on winning it! So, for the next two months that's what the band worked on, the three songs they would play in competition. See, every band got 20 minutes on stage and they could play as many songs as they could get in. Caribou decided to play three songs; "One Fine Morning" by Lighthouse, "25 or 6 to 4" by Chicago and the big finisher, "Play That Funky Music White Boy" by Wild Cherry.

Ok, so the night arrived and the band was ready, scared a little but ready. The first two bands played and one of them does "Funky Music!" Well, too late to change the plan now so Caribou went up. All three songs sounded great and the winner was announced.........

"And in second place,"

CARIBOU!

That's right, runner up! The band that won first place was named, and this is kinda funny, POLICE FORCE, a hard rock band that broke up right after winning the band battle!

For our efforts we did win a Yamaha power amp and a huge trophy. That's ok, that wasn't the last band battle Caribou would be in. In 1982, well, we'll talk about that one later.
